A night school that sits on the Kings Bastion fortification in Old Portsmouth behind the Garrison Church. The purpose of the night school is to bring the forgotten maritime and social history of Portsmouth back to life through local people and historians.
The design developed through rearranging the existing pentagonal geometry of the King’s Bastion using triangles as a common divider of the program just as a pentagon is composed of triangles.
The night school intensifies the heritage of this historic monument by making historical references to the King’s Bastion in its formal composition. It is a city contained within a building rather than a building contained within a city.
